Shamrock tableware
|
Belleek was started in the Northern Ireland town of the same name* in 1849. Early production
was domestic ware – washstands, floor tiles, electrical insulators
and tableware. One co-founder, noted London architect Robert Williams
Armstrong, had higher aspirations however. He hired fourteen skilled
potters away from their English employers in Stoke-on-Trent.

 |
Porcelain was first
featured by Belleek at the Dublin Exposition of 1872. Soon after, orders
were taken from Queen Victoria and the Prince of Wales, and the company’s
fame soon became worldwide.
Every part of every
piece of Belleek pottery is still applied by hand, including the decoration.
* The name Belleek is from
the Gaelic béal leice, which translates as "Flagstone Ford".
