Plain white
china coordinates with any decor and is never out of place . At the highest
level of quality it comes in two varieties: bone china and porcelain.
Which
to choose?
It's a matter of personal taste. Here are the differences: |
Bone
china was invented by Josiah Spode about 1800. It is
essentially porcelain with the addition of organic calcium,
extracted from animal bone. It is fired at lower temperatures
and does not vitrify in the kiln, with the result that it is
porous and must be glazed.
| Bone china has a creamy translucence (right) that porcelain
does not. |
 |
Most of the world’s bone china is made in England. |

 |
Porcelain,
like so many other things, was invented by the Chinese, well
over a thousand years ago. It is the hardest, densest from
of pottery ever discovered. Europeans puzzled over it for
centuries until about 1710 when Germans, then Italians, learned
how to make it.
| Porcelain is incredibly durable, which is why it is
used for things like linings for double boilers and egg
coddlers. |
 |
Continental Europeans are still specialists in porcelain today.
