is the sole survivor of the UK’s major glassmakers, still producing
mouthblown, handshaped lead crystal and handmade glass products for
a worldwide market.
In
1925, Yorkshireman Leonard Elmhirst and his wealthy American wife,
Dorothy, bought and restored Dartington Hall, then a medieval ruin.
They found in South Devon a depressed economy and little hope for
a brighter future. Their efforts to rejuvenate local industry led
eventually to the creation of Dartington Crystal.
