About
Salviati
The origins of the Venetian glass tradition can be traced as far
back as a 1000 years or so ago, linked to the rich glass heritage
of the Mediterranean East.
Later it became the backbone of the great Renaissance glass era.
Thanks to a resurgence in interest of Venetian glass, after a period
of steady decline due to the emergence of both English and Bohemian
crystal, the Salviati glass works was established in 1859 by an Italian
lawyer named Antonio Salviati.

Focusing on pieces that feature contrasting colours, types of glass
(transparent paired with opaque glass), and types of surface (shiny
next to matte). Salviati also maintain a range of classic
Venetian techniques :
 |
Sommerso ("submerged") : this
technique is executed by dipping the gob of glass on
the blowpipe into crogioli containing different colours.
The effect is that of floating strands of colour in the
finished piece.
Incamiciato : in this technique used to achieve
opaque colours, a layer of transparent coloured glass
is superimposed over opaque white glass. |
| Cannes ("cane") : The Canna
is a piece of either transparent or opaque glass that
has been drawn out into a long stick (or cane). Segments
of canes of various lengths and colours are laid out
on a flat surface in a decorative pattern and are heated
in the furnace. The maestro gathers a first lay of glass
onto his blowpipe, rolls it up into the prepared mosaic
of canes, and models it into the desired shape. |
 |
 |
Battuto : With this technique
of decoration, the entire surface of the piece is cut
as if it was ground, producing small, irregular and adjacent
markings running in the same direction.
Pulegoso : This is the effect created by the inclusion
of many irregular air bubbles in the glass. |
